Visitors

This message has been brought to you by: GRACE!
I am sure that many of the following messages are also going to be on the same topic, but here is one that is about some special visitors that have come by to see her.

This is a rare occasion, Grace wide eyed and happy at the same time (while not being in somebodies arms). I thought it was a great pic.

Another quick family photo.

And finally the visitors. Grace's grandparents from TN came for the week. Above is Grandma Sue loving on her, while below is Grandpa Steve relaxing with her.

I guess they must have thought her quite a gift for they brought her a stocking of her own and placed her under the tree :)It has been a fun week of introducing the family members to Grace!

Christmas Greetings

Merry Christmas from the Daniels Family....
Wait, someone else wants to be added into this greeting...Merry Christmas from all three of us.

Matt, Lana, and Grace

MOUSE!

Now typically I would be yelling and screaming and running around if I saw a mouse in my house...

But this has to be the cutest little Christmas mouse ever.

Check out that tail!
Merry Christmas to all

Home

We have been in the hospital since Friday morning at about 5:00 am so when Monday about 3:00 pm came and we finally were able to leave the hospital it was such a great feeling.

Here is a short version of the past few days events:

Friday 12/18
- water broke at 3:30 am
- Amy and Dad quickly got in the car to drive from Harrisonburg to Roanoke so that Amy could be with us.
- Admitted to the hospital
- Nothing happening...absolutely NOTHING!
- 11:00 am started getting Pitocin to start labor
- From 1:00 pm on Friday to 2:45 am Saturday hard labor with contractions coming about 2-3 minutes apart the whole time. :(

Saturday 12/19
- 2:45 am got an epidural
- Had a 2 hour nap...Heavenly!
- Woke up feeling GREAT! I am learning that epidurals are nice (especially after 14 hours of contractions...)
- After 30 minutes of pushing....
- Grace arrived at 10:21 am

Mom, Dad and Baby are all doing fine....
But we had to stay in the hospital so long because it was so long between when my water broke to when delivery happened. So monitoring had to take place.

The important thing is that now we are home, happy and learning how to do this parent thing :)

A glimpse at Grace

Grace is a little over a day old, we are already getting calls from Mamaw Kiser that we need to post some more pictures.

I got this picture of Matt holding Grace soon after she was cleaned up by the nurse.
This is a picture Matt took this afternoon. She doesn't look happy, but you can at least see her hair!

Graces hand...

Graces feet...

Graces ear.

That is a closer look at Grace.

Still here

I thought that since I had not blogged since Saturday and, that one involved a trip to the hospital I would give an update.

I am still here at home, waiting.

But at least I have company. Matt has worked his vacation so that he is off from today to Jan 4th!

We have been walking, doing chores around the house, and watching movies (Ice Age is next since I have never seen it)

Still big and uncomfortable, Still looking forward to seeing our little girl,.....

Still Waiting!

Almost 38 weeks

This is Amy updating the status for Lana.

Lana is at the end of her 37th week. She will start her 38th week on Tuesday.

Yesterday Lana was contracting about every 10-11 minutes. Today she called me at 12:30 pm and said that I might want to come down here, since she was contracting about every 7 minutes. When we got here she was actually contracting closer to every 4 minutes. About 4:00 we called the Dr. and decided that we would go to the hospital and have her checked.

We got to the hospital about 5pm. Lana was checked and about 1 cm. The Dr. told her to go home and relax. Lana was really hoping that she would leave with her baby, but the time will come.

Here is her most recent belly picture.

Keeping Busy

With less than three weeks to go before my due date, I am anxiously looking forward to getting my big Christmas present (our little girl). One of my friends mentioned that it helps to keep busy because if you stay at home and only think about wanting to have the baby, it will seem like it will never happen! So thanks to family and GE we are trying to keep busy so my mind is occupied a little.

Last weekend Matt and I went to Harrisonburg and had Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Cookie day (a Kiser tradition) all in one weekend. This was because this is the last trip that we are going to make before Grace is born, so all the holidays needed to be fit in.

Yesterday we went to the Hotel Roanoke (which is always amazing around Christmas time with the many, many Christmas trees that the local businesses decorate for the hotel) for the GE Christmas dinner. It is always fun to meet for the first time, and see again some of the people that Matt works with. This was my third time going to this party and I must say that it gets more enjoyable each time, maybe because I get to know some of the people better over the year.

Pending a trip to the hospital....

Thursday we are going to go and assemble little red wagons and trikes for children in need. That was a very fun event last year with very yummy pizza afterward. We will see how much I will be able to help, I might just be there to hand the tools to the individuals who are doing the real work.

Saturday will be a early morning because we are planning on going to a warehouse and helping with Christmas baskets which are actually very large boxes that are filled with food and toys and other items that local businesses donate. These are filled then delivered to local needy families. Last year we added in a toy train and also some body spray. I wonder what station we will be able to get this year...hopefully something toward the end (so I do not have to bend over too much to help it all fit in) and also not too heavy. This was a great event last year because 1. they had great donuts to eat... and 2. we took our radio and had Christmas music to dance around to while we waited for the boxes to be carted around.

This is only the plan for this week, next week we have infant CPR among many other things. I really am trying to keep myself busy while at the same time not too over booked so that I get exhausted.

(But honestly I have to admit that I hope that I do not make it to half of these events, because I want to meet this little girl...and soon!)

My favorite time of year

It is now my favorite time of year. Christmas? Nope!

Advent!

I know it is kind of odd but it is true that at times when my teachers would ask what was my favorite holiday other kids would answer halloween, thanksgiving, Christmas, or even their birthdays, but I remember answering Advent. I am not sure why I like it so much. Maybe it is because:

1. The anticipation to Chrismas...
2. We get to eat by candlelight...
3. Or maybe it was the only time of the year that mom and dad would let me handle matches :)

Well, who knows why I like it so much, but I do. And now thanks to my father-in-law and mother-in-law we have a beautiful advent wreath.

This was my first attempt at decorating the wreath. I think it looks pretty good for a first year try. We have been enjoying this advent wreath and the sayings that go along with it that Matt grew up saying each time the candles were lit.

This is a tradition that I really look forward to passing along to our little girl when she finally decides to arrive.

Happy Chicken-Day!

Greetings All,

I have once again absconded with my wife's blog to bring you Turkey Day Greetings! In our case, Chicken Day Greetings. Last Thursday marked Lana and My second thanksgiving together. I always have to count. Our first Thanksgiving was spent hours apart - I barely knew her then. That was two years ago. Last Turkey Day, We were able to host our first Turkey Day with our respective parents - and a very un-cooperative Turducken.

This year was a new one. We have so much to be thankful for, and so many thanks to give. We are thankful for our soon-to-be newborn baby, this house, our friends and family, Generous Electric, and each other!

Life is Good!

Anyway, you are probably wondering why we celebrated "Chicken Day", instead of with the traditional turkey or ham. Well, we plain just didn't wanna. We had talked about making a turkey, but we were both enjoying our four-day weekend together, and just didn't think spending hours basting an unwilling bird sounded like much fun.

We had recently found a taste-alike recipe for KFC's 11 herb and spices chicken. In hindsight, it wasn't a taste-alike, but it was darn tootin' tasty. Ours had fourteen herbs and spices, and smelled wonderful. Who would have thought about putting brown sugar in a chicken breading? Anyway, we prepared the chicken pieces 'n parts in an "Alton Brown"-inspired manner. Cut the chicken into nugget-sized pieces, allow to air-dry to a sticky goodness, coat with the fourteen herb and spices, some egg, and good ole breadcrumbs. Shallow-fry in 350-degree F peanut oil, and cook to a golden brown. Labor intensive, but very yummy.

Served on the side was a quickly whipped up batch of homemade creamed peas, and fresh candied Yams - straight from the can (and modified a lil-bit).

And, of course, we had a dessert. More on that later...

Lana worked on decorating the table while I supervised the last of the creamed peas, and we had Thanksgiving.

We finally sat down, still somewhat exhausted, but very thankful. Dinner was good, very filling - and we had enough for the typical Turk- err - Chicken-Day Leftovers. And then there was Dessert. It was also fabulous. Lana and I seem to have a tradition of never leaving a recipe well enough alone.

We had some apples to spare. We quickly agreed to some kind of apple thing for dessert. Lana is well known - at least around here - for some amazing pie crusts. So we made one of those, but instead of her typical apple pie filling that she makes, topped with a crumbly oatmeal topping. This time, we used an apple-turnover filling that I had, topped with another pie crust (with sugar and cinnamon, of course). The pie was amazing. A little wet, but very good.

Chicken-Day was amazing, and we had fun making it amazing.

Happy Chicken-Day Everyone!
-Matt

Let the nesting begin!

Friday was my last day at work, so here I am at home...with nothing to do but nest and get ready for baby.

So watch out master bathroom, you are the first one on my list. Then I will try to take a room or half a room each day or so and do some really good cleaning that has been needing to be done for a long time.

We will see how this goes :)

A new look

This is Amy. Lana has asked me to submit this post for her. The new look is NOT that she has had the baby! Maybe another time it will be.

Lana woke up this morning with her long, thick, beautiful hair. I went to Mom and Dad's to visit and was commenting on this. Then we started talk about how it may be easier for her to have short hair when the baby comes. Before we knew it, we were out the door to get her hair cut!

This is the long, thick hair I mentioned.
(Davene, if you look closely in the mirror, you can see Jeff)
The hairdresser was amazed at the amount of hair Lana had.
She had to find larger bands for Lana's hair!
This is the braid they cut off. The hairdresser said she had never seen
one that thick before. Lana's hair was long enough to give to Locks of Love. This is Lana's "new do" from the front--very cute!

and from the back. I think Lana will find this very easy to take care of.
I think Lana will find that she appreciate the shorter hair when her baby comes!

I have always relied on the kindness of strangers

and recently many "strangers" have been very kind!

Let me start from the beginning, so many people have been so kind to us since we found out that we are expecting. I know that I will not be able to mention everyone, but here is a start.

My friend Sarah had just had a baby in February. She and her husband had decided that it would be their last, so she wanted to no longer have maternity clothes around. In April/May I told her that I was expecting and she gifted me with about four boxes of maternity clothes (almost all of what was her wardrobe).

A family friend Karen had just had a baby a few months ago (a very sweet little girl). And she has been so very kind to think of Matt and I as her little girl grows out of the clothing that she is wearing. Karen has been gifting us some of her old clothing.

A couple from our church just happen to live less than a block down the road from us, so we have gotten to know them a little. Their sons had just gotten new furniture in their bedrooms, so their youngest had to get rid of his old toy shelf, which happened to be a changing table. So at church one day the husband stopped Matt and I to ask if we would like a changing table...well yes, of course! We now have a wonderful changing station upstairs and one downstairs.

Our Sunday School class in general...they threw a baby shower for us. We had been going to this church for less than a year and we are not even members, yet they are so kind to throw this amazing shower for us. Half of the people I have to admit I did not know who they were, but both they and I thought that this would be a good way to get to know eachother.

A household in the neighborhood had been cleaning out their place and Matt and I talked to the people there and were told to take what we wanted. We got a free ottoman for my glider rocker, a wooden step stool for helping a child get to the sink or counters, and a plastic picnic table with attached benches for a child.

The neighbor across the street has a daughter who is turning three this month, she has greatly upgraded her playset in the backyard. Because of this, they offered Matt and I a small plastic slide that she has outgrown.

There are so many others that I can mention, just to name one would be the firemen that installed our carseat. I can not even begin to mention about the kindness of my mother and father-in-law and all they have given us. I will also not begin to mention the kindness of my mother and father and both of my sisters and all of their kindness (this post is already too long to begin to talk about how both families have helped us).

I am constantly amazed and in awe of the generosity of individuals. And whether these people read this blog or not, I just wanted to take this time to say THANK YOU! We have been so blessed and it is all because of those who have chosen to show us such kindness.

Long Time In The Making

...about four generations (at least) to be exact.

When getting married Matt and I requested kind of an unusual picture, we wanted to have both families in one picture to show one huge united family through marriage.

So for about a year we have had this beautiful large picture laying around the house. I had been thinking about where to put it, and how to make it best used....So I finally came up with an idea, that is now in the works and Matt and I both agree that it looks great.Up the staircase of our house we had this large empty wall. So in the very middle of the staircase we put the two family picture from the wedding. My family is on the left side of the picture and Matt's is on the right side. So the idea would be that old family pictures of my ancestors would go up the staircase (on the left side of the wedding pic) and Matt's old family pictures of ancestors would go down the staircase (on the right side of the wedding pic).

The idea came because one day my mom handed me a folder full of old family pictures, and I thought they were too wonderful and special to keep hidden away. So I framed them in random frames, and have hung them in little groups to be seen and admired as you walk up the stairs.

I have more to add, but I think that it looks great.

Steve and Sue...Matt's side is empty, is there a way we can get good copies of old pictures?

31 Weeks

Matt and I went for a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway last Sunday, so we decided to get my 31 week picture in during that time also.I had to laugh when I saw this picture because I told Matt that it involved three of his favorite things....fall leaves and colors, exposed rock (there is a quarry in the background) and of course ME! I was of course joking when I said this, but he agreed with me.

It was a great trip, hopefully we will download some more pictures from that drive, but at a later date.

Good Memory

So I have learned today that Matt has a much better memory than I do (at least now during the pregnancy).

He called me tonight to let me know that he was on his way home from work. And during this phone call he asked me if I had started dinner. I was being a bit lazy today, so I had not even begun dinner, I said "no." He responded by asking me if I wanted to go out on a date.

Well, of course I want to go on a date!

I was excited, and went up to change and get ready for the date. But I could not figure out for the life of me why all of the sudden he wanted to go on a date. He had mentioned that it was a special day...I wonder what happened at work that made it so special? I will have to ask him when he comes home.

He arrived at home with a doughnut for me (that was just because it was left over from the day at work) and the question of where I want to celebrate this special day. So I took advantage of this opening to have him tell me of the day. His day was nice and good, but not special at all. So why in the world did he want to take me on a date...WHAT WAS SO SPECIAL?

I was doing my hair while talking to Matt, right before we left and it dawned on me...it is October 30th...

Two years to the day that we first met.

What can I say, my memory is not what it used to be. I am glad that Matt is remembering these special occasions when I do not. So we went out to Smoky Bones Grill and had a wonderful dinner, conversation and just in general time together.

A very large milestone now has been met for both of us...we have now been together longer than any of our other relationships in the past have lasted. And whats more, we are happily together and have a bright future ahead.

Little did either of us realize two years ago that we would be married and have a little girl on the way. I am so glad that I have had two years of knowing and loving you, I look forward to many, many more.

Dancing the weekend away

With my little girl on the way, two of my girl friends from Harrisonburg decided that it would be good to have one last girls weekend together before I become a mom (we will continue these weekends later, but it will be different).
Stephanie and Jenn drove down from Harrisonburg on Friday and got to Roanoke around 5:30. After many driving adventures (which always seem to happen with Stephanie in the car) we were on our way to check into our hotel.

Our hotel was in Christiansburg, I am so glad that Jenn found it when she did because there was a NASCAR race close by and this was one of the last rooms available in the area. After checking in we made our way to Floyd, VA. At Floyd we got some really good Mexican food and lots of good talking and stories. Such a good start to a girls weekend out, but it only got better! We then walked down the street to the Floyd Country Store, after a 4 dollar entrance fee we were able to browse the shop, listen to three great bluegrass bands, and we even learned how to do some flat-footing dance. An older lady at the dance, Kay, was one who was teaching us how to do it. She looked at me and said "honey, you have no excuse not to dance. I learned how to twist when I was pregnant. My husband begged me not do it because he did not want to explain to the hospital that twisting set me into labor..." She was a interesting and wild lady.

At 11:00 pm we left the dance, made it back to the hotel and stayed up to almost 2:00 am just talking and talking.

Finally after sleeping in, then a great brunch at Cracker Barrel we said our good-byes till next month when I will once again be in Harrisonburg.

That night Matt and I went to a local YMCA to attend a Contra Dance. It had been months since we did this kind of dancing last, but we had a blast! The band was great, the caller was wonderful, and the people were very friendly (even when one man joked about how we were dancing for three). I have a feeling that dancing is going to have to slow down or stop till about Feb. or later, but I am glad that I was able to have such a wonderful dance filled weekend.

The List

My very long list of what I would like to get done before our little one arrives is slowly getting checked off and in return becoming shorter and shorter :)

First, I finally finished the quilt that I have been working on. All of the materials that were used were extra scraps left over from other projects that were done in the nursery. I think that it turned out well.

Matt had a lot of say in this quilt and he came up with the pattern, and the idea of alternating the blue and yellow pinwheels (without his in put I would have done all yellow pinwheels with blue background, but I like this so much better!)I think that one of my favorite part of this quit is the back. This shows all of the stitching that was done. It is finally done and I am happy with it.

Second, we had our last childbirth class last night.

Two more things checked off, so many more yet to do...but I am now this much closer to finally feeling really ready for our little girl.

Random Thoughts

Just some things I wanted to write down since I had not done a real post in quite awhile:

1. The only thing that I can find that is good about school starting at 7:30am is (beside getting out of school at 2:30) the wonderful sunrises that I get to gaze out at while driving around town to get to work. The sky was truly lovely on Thursday, I hope for more mornings like that.

2. Last Tuesday I realized that I have a little kick boxer in me. For not only can I now feel the kicks, and not only can Matt feel the kicks, but now Matt can watch my belly and SEE the kicks. He was watching me one evening and just pointed at me and said, "Yep, there was one....and there is another one" and it went on from there.

3. Thursday we went to childbirth classes (this one was our fourth one). It is kind of humorous that at each class as soon as we being to watch the video for the day, my little girl starts kicking like crazy. Almost as if to say "Mommy, I can do that. Watch me, I can do that too." Yes, I know that you can be born....just not yet!

4. Just had a guest at our house (well 4 guests). The Wampole family came down to help Matt and I with some tasks that were beginning to loom over head. For instance Amy helped me wash all of the baby clothes in Dreft, set up the dresser and the closet. We put together the swing and bassinet (and covered them so that they will not get too dirty in the mean time). Mike helped Matt with his workbench and also entertaining the two boys.

5. In addition to laundry Amy and I were cooking machines. On Saturday we made about 15 meals for freezing. This is so that when I am not wanting to cook late in my pregnancy or when the baby comes and I do not want to cook, I can just walk to the freezer and all will be done. We made: Meatloaf, Ham and Potato Casserole, Stuffed Shells, Chili, Chicken Tetrazzini, and Chicken and Corn Enchiladas. It was hard to let all of this food go straight to the freezer and not try it or eat it as a meal, but I know that it will be wonderful to have it later on.

6. And to end on a very happy note... At my last doctor's visit I had the great pleasure of drinking the orange liquid that tests for gestational diabetes. And to my dismay I did not pass the test. My numbers should have been 135 or lower and mine was 140. So I was ordered to go to the local clinic and get fasting blood work done. So after fasting, then having my blood drawn every hour for three hours, and waiting three days for results...I found out that my numbers are actually fine. It must have been the instant oatmeal that I ate for breakfast before the first test. I really did come to terms with the results if they had not been fine, my theory is that gestational diabetes (though not desired) is a small complication compared to some other things that can happen during pregnancy. But I am at the same time very relieved that all is well and that Grace and I are fine.

7. Oh yeah, one last thing...in case you did not know, we decided to name our little girl Grace. And I have realized that I need to remind myself that I am full of Grace, because I am certainly not GraceFULL at this time. Ha Ha!

So here I am delaying going through boxes and continuing what Amy and I began this weekend with cleaning and organizing. This blog is long enough...maybe I should get back to work.

Dreams Trying To Tell Me Something?

Last night I had a very strange dream. I had a dream that I was asked to preach one Sunday at Weavers Mennonite Church (the church that I grew up in). The topic was about having a very busy life and how we should let God be in charge of our life and let Him determine what should/could be done and also when/how things should be done. But the funny part of the dream is that in the dream it was Sunday morning and I was sitting in the back of the church while the opening hymn was sung....WRITING MY SERMON because I was too busy that week to write it!

I awoke thinking, was God trying to tell me something about my life? I know I am busy but I did not think that I was that busy! Here are just a few things that are going on in my life:

1. I have become a fill in Kindergarten assistant at a local elementary school from now to Nov. 20. So I will be working daily.

2. Trying to do all of the projects that I would like to do for the nursery (quilt, shades, etc)

3. Trying to do things for others (making a gift for my niece, making food for those in need, etc)

4. Attempting to keep the house together (cleaning, washing clothes, etc)

5. Making food, and extra food for when the baby does come.

6. Attempting to have some of a social life (hosting visitors, hosting parties, going to BBQs)

Just a few things off of the top of my head...do you think that my dream was trying to tell me something?

Rain, Rain Go Away...

That was what I was repeating over and over all last week and up till about 4:00 pm on Saturday. The reason for that particular mantra was for the fact that back in August Matt and I decided to host a grilling/outdoor BBQ/gathering party at our house. We invited just about everyone that Matt knows at GE and had about 35 people respond that they were attending.

So here I am on Monday before the party starting to watch the weather reports. Each day the news goes from 50% chance of rain...to...60% chance of rain...till... on Friday it was...100% chance of rain! What am I going to do with up to 35 people in my house? I was planning on having the backyard open for soccer, Frisbee, etc. Our house is a nice size, but it is not huge. I was starting to get worried.

In the invitation we told people that they can come anytime after 4:00 pm to hang out and play, we would eat at 6:00 and the party would last as long as they stayed. As it turned out only four families came. Three of the families came right at 4:00, each had three children. We had nine children ranging from the ages of 7 months to 13 years in our house. So we pulled out the dolls, the Legos, the Nintendo, the Jonny Jump Up, and anything else that we could think of to keep the kids playing nicely together. We had playdoh, puzzles, and beanbag games being played. The kids were on the porch, in the garage, in the living room, in the dining room, and almost anywhere else you could imagine. However, they were amazingly well behaved, had great manners, and played really well together.

The kids played so well that the adults actually go some time to sit and talk and laugh together. I finally go to meet three of the individuals that Matt has been working very closely with for the past few months.

The food was amazing! We provided hamburgers and hotdogs, everyone else brought sides and a drink. There was so much to choose from and so many leftovers. Great food, great converstaions, and a wonderful time watching the kids play (and playing with them at times). It was a wonderful party...even if it did rain.

I am now looking forward to Halloween. I understand we are having a party then too!

We have been adopted...

at least that is the best way that I can describe what has happened with one of our neighbor's cats.Isn't he just too cute? Well, here is the story. Matt and I moved in about a year and a half ago. Soon after we met one of our neighbors that have two cats. They would go on trips and we would be more than willing to go over and feed and play with the cats (they were both indoor cats).

A few trips later, where we fed the cats, Scooter (pictured above) became an outdoor cat (due to multiple reasons).
As you can see, Matt really enjoys Scooter. However, I do not think that Matt enjoys cleaning up the present that Scooter left us one day. We woke up to find that Scooter had brought us a bird (after spending a lot of time with it...from the looks of the "bird") and put it in the middle of our front yard. Thanks for the gift, Scooter!
Well, after Scooter became an outdoor cat and we would see him every once in awhile...but not often. However, in the past few months we have walked out of our door and either heard a "meow" as Scooter is crossing the road to come and say Hi to us, or we find him lounging in our bushes in our front yard waiting to get some love and affection from us.

One day Matt and I were sitting in our living room with the windows open, and we suddenly heard a light thump and a loud meow. We looked over to the window to find Scooter had placed his paws on our window sill on the outside and was trying to see and talk to us through the screen. I am so glad that he is declawed on his front paws or else we would probably have some holes in the screen.

I think that this is the best of both worlds for all considered. Matt and I can play with a cat without having to care for it, feed it, or do all that goes along with owning a pet. Scooter can get loving from his owners family, get loving from Matt and I, and get wonderful care from his owners.
What a cutie! I am so glad that we finally got adopted :)
Just makes me wonder why Scooter has decided to adopt us or become our "protector"?

A Small Construction Project

Hi All,

I have once again taken over my wife's blog to bring you an announcement. Well, that sounds drastic, let me re-phrase that. I did something cool, and wanted to tell people. I built a bench!

Well, now that it is put that way, it doesn't sound so exciting. Well, I think it is, so Nah!

It was a lazy saturday afternoon. It was a good day to tear into a new project. Lana and I were putting around the house and doing this and that. We had a tasty lunch, and I was looking for something new to do.

Several weeks ago (Was it that long ago?) we had a family field trip to the Frontier Culture Museum. We had a blast there looking at how things were done, how things were used, how things were done - by hand. It was fun and amazing. Well, one of the things that I noticed while I was there were the way some of the benches were built. Now, mind you - I don't have an Adz, or a proper hatchet (for the time), so I couldn't build any of the benches we saw in the German house, nor did I have any good-sized trees that I could cut down and build like the ones in the English house.

The ones in the gift shop - now those I could build! They were made almost like my workbench - with lots of boards laid sideways and fixed together. I had a few loose boards of treated lumber at the house, so I decided that I would try to build a few.

When I got home, I looked over my meager pile of wood and decided I couldn't build it exactly like the ones we sat on. But I could get it close enough to learn some of the design, and maybe build a prototype.

I don't know if any of Lana's reader's know this or not, but we are planning to build a pergola in our back yard - at some point in the near future. Well, my plan is to have some benches and tables made for us to use in the shade of that pergola. If you don't know what a pergola is, google has lots of pictures of them. But basically, it is a back deck with some very simple shade built over it.

Well, yesterday, I was feeling my oats and decided to see how big a bench I could build using the "Frontier Culture Gift-Shop Bench" method. I dug through the wood pile, and gathered a bunch of 1"x6" boards, and started laying out my design.

The pile of wood wasn't as big as I thought it was, and I depleted it rather quickly. So I had to build a much smaller bench than I hoped. I trimmed my dreams back a bit, and finally settled on a small bench. I trimmed off the ragged edges of some boards, and shortened others until I had eight boards of roughly the same length - that weren't falling apart. I picked out eight shorter ones - Exactly one foot four and a half inches long - to be the legs.

By five o'clock, Lana was telling me to stop sweating, stop playing, and get ready to go over to see our church-friend's new baby. A tall order for me - I sweat like crazy. I hung out under the living room ceiling fan to cool off. After visiting with them, playing and holding the baby, and giving them a wonderful feast for their dinner, we came back home. I'm sure Lana will tell more of that story later. But in short, we had a blast!

After getting home, we were hungry. It was getting dark, and my hopes for finishing the bench in one day were dwindling. I went back outside, and surveyed the wood-pile I had made. Everything was cut to length, and the plan to assemble it all was already done. I figured I could still finish it - if I hurried. So, I turned on the driveway lights, and grabbed my hammer.

I am quite sure that I woke up the neighbors at least once - I wasn't very easy on the nails I was using. I wanted them IN THE WOOD. Two nails per side, for every two layers, and the thing was done.

I wasn't very happy with the end result - I didn't have much of a straight-edge for making sure the boards were lined up - although it probably doesn't really matter. The boards themselves were old and warped.

I picked up the result of my hours of work, and set it up-right on the driveway. And it rocked back and forth. You can imagine how inventive the cursing was at that point. Of course, Lana decided to come out and check on me at this point. I showed her the bench, and she was very pleased at how it looked. She rocked back and forth on it a little, to see how steady it was. Of course, it rocked a little, but otherwise it was exceedingly sturdy.

While she was sitting on it, I poked around the (bench) legs, and found the culprit. One of the legs had slid down while I was hammering away at it. so it stuck out about a quarter-inch. Not too much, but enough to make the whole thing rock. I fetched my fine saw, and turned the bench up on it's end - after helping Lana up off of it. Five minutes of frantic sawing later had the bench much more stable than before, although, it rocked a little. I wasn't very happy with it, but it was my prototype.

I moved the bench to the front porch, and set it under the window - on the other side from the swing. And much to my surprise, when it was sitting on the flat concrete of the porch - it was incredibly stable. No rocking at all. Apparently, the driveway where I was doing the construction had a large curve to it to help drain the water off quickly. This was making the bench rock - not the construction.

I called Lana out to see the "finished" work. She was happy with it, and we spent at least ten minutes sitting on it together, watching the neighborhood go by - or at least, the night-owls go by.

Later,

Childbirth class

Last night we had the first of seven child birth classes that we are taking through the hospital that we will be delivering at in December.

The class was good, we are one of about 10 couples that are attending. Everyone else is farther along than we are, but I am glad that we are taking this class at this time so that we can get the information...have time to absorb it...have time to practice some of the techniques...and hopefully remember some of this information when the time comes.

We got mainly the basic information last night, and we also practiced two breathing techniques. I am looking forward to see what else we will learn in these many classes to come.

One of my favorite parts of the class was that the teacher ended the class with some quotes about childbirth and parenting, this one was my favorite and I wanted to share it with you:

"Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body." By Elizabeth Stone

Special Visitor

Steve, your visit certainly does require a blog post...I just had not gotten around to it. Thank you for giving me a little push :)

On September 1 I happened to receive a phone call and an e-mail that I did not know that I had gotten till late in the day (this was because I was subbing that day). When I finally got the information I found out that my father-in-law was trying to reach both me and eventually Matt to gain permission to sleep on our sofa as he travels to northern VA for an interview. Of course we said NO! "You may not sleep on our sofa, but you may sleep on our guest bed and use our guest bathroom. We will also feed you well and enjoy your company, but NO you may not sleep on our sofa!"

So Monday, Labor Day, we had a guest for dinner. Steve had a nice but long trip (he had to fight all of the Labor Day traffic) and made it to our place around 6:00 pm. Great dinner, lots of stories, tons of laughter, then we pulled out the baby photos from Matt's childhood....
That led to lots more laughter and stories and a fairly late night, but one that was a great experience.

The next morning I had to leave the house at 7:00 am to teach a classroom of 4th graders. So I said my goodbyes, only to come home to a surprise. Steve did all of the dishes that I had left the previous night so that I could visit. Those Daniels men! They are so wonderful with doing dishes :)

Wednesday night we had our wonderful guest back. This time he was driving from Northern VA back home. The visit was much shorter (about 9 hours) and mainly for sleeping, but it was great to see Steve again.

We missed you greatly Sue! It was not quite the same to have one half of the in-law pair and not the other, but I understand that you had a very important appointment at home.

Time Away

I have had a longer time away than I had ever expected, especially since I do not have a full time job. However there have been some reasons for that:

1. I have gotten back to subbing for the local school systems! I have been called about twice a week for the past two weeks. This is shocking to me since most of the teachers usually do not want to take off this early in the school year.

2. I have had some very eventful days which led to some very uneventful days full of sleeping to recover from all of the action. One of the eventful days was this past Saturday, we helped with the Belmont Yard Sale. I woke at 3:30 am and went strong until about 10:30 pm. Let's just say Sunday and Monday were full of naps to recover. But Matt and I made $53 and got a lot of stuff out of our house :)

3. I have been working on a lot of projects for the nursery. More posting on that later.

4. My camera has dead batteries. So much of what I want to post I need pictures for....so I need to actually take time to recharge batteries (I know, bad reason for not posting, but still...)

5. You get the idea. Good excuse peppered with bad excuses...equals no posts for a long time.

I hope to be better about it from now on.

Appointment #5

Yesterday I had appointment #5.

All is well. I had another sonogram because last appointment our baby did not cooperate with getting into the right positions for all of the pictures that the nurse and the doctor wanted. So I got to see our little girl again and most importantly hear her heart beat.

Galloping along at 153 bpm.

Nothing much to report. It was just such a blessing to first hear her heart beat, but then to see her on the screen moving around and twisting was so wonderful. It was a bit strange to see her kick or punch, and feel it at the same time.

I can not believe that this is already appointment #5, it is going so fast. Soon I will be able to see our little girl, and not just on a black and white, grainy tv screen.

Quick post...

Two nights ago something very special happened.

Matt felt the baby kick for the very first time!

It was a very surprising and joyful time for both of us.

Greetings All!
I have once again taken over my wife's blog to tell another story.

Back in the middle of August, Lana posted a blog telling about the harvesting of the pumpkin. Well, a few nights ago, we "canned" it. Now, usually, when we want to make pumpkin bread, or pumpkin this, or pumpkin that - we go buy a can of pumpkin. Boring, easy, and good enough.

Well, now that we had this awesome pumpkin, we decided to try to can it ourselves. In short, it worked beautifully! But the story is in the details - why else would you be reading this?

The first chore was simply cutting the thing in half. We didn't have any knives big enough. So, we did our best with the heavy kitchen knife we have here. Now, the Kiser women have this tendency to injure themselves when cutting stuff - so I handled the knife. No injury - except now the pumpkin was cut in half.

We placed the two halves - face-down - on one of Lana's industrial sized aluminum cookie sheets. Covered it with foil, and baked it for a good long while. It filled the kitchen with this wonderful smelling pumpkin-ness! Soon enough, the insides were mostly cooked, soft, gooey, and ready for canning.

Lana did most of the scraping to get the meat out of the pumpkin. She did an excellent job - when she was done, there was only a thin shell of pumpkin skin left - the rest went into the blender for a ride.

We split the pumpkin goo into bags, labeled them, and froze them flat. In one of Lana's earlier posts, she mentioned that I labeled something 2007. Oops - my fault. It was easy enough to change that 7 into a 9. These "canned" pumpkins are now waiting for a cold day and some fresh potato soup to make pumpkin bread. That will be one tasty dinner!

Until next time,
-M

23 Weeks

I know...according to most of the calendars I am 22 weeks and 4 days (I am rounding up). So here is an updated picture since I have not had one on here since 18 weeks.

Things are going well, and we are very anxiously getting ready for the arrival which is months away.

2007 was a good year...for someone

One of my friends got me in the habit of when I hear a four digit number that is less than the current year to say "that was a good year...for someone." For instance if I am at a cashier and the price to pay is $16.95, that would be a time when that would at least cross my mind.

With that said, this past weekend Matt and I cooked up and prepared the pumpkin for freezing. Matt took it upon himself to write the date when we did it on the bag. Actually all he wrote was Pumpkin 2009, but one of the very first bags Matt was talking out loud and said..."Pumpkin, 2007." I quickly corrected him that it was actually 2009, but it did cross my mind that 2007 was a good year for someone.

In fact it was a good year for you, Matt! (and yes I did inform him of this as I thought of it)
-You graduated college
-You got a wonderful job at GE
-You moved to VA
-And most importantly...You met ME!

And so far the years have continued to be good years (in my opinion). I am looking forward to experiencing many more good years for both of us.

Faber Mine

On Saturday Matt and I had a very early morning.

We woke, had a very quick breakfast and were on the road. Our goal was to be parked in the Sheetz parking lot in Lynchburg by 7:30 am. The reason for this crazy action on a nice Saturday morning was because we were meeting the Gem and Mineral Society club (which we are members) in order to go rock hounding at Faber Mine.

Faber mine is a mine that is located on the edge of Nelson County but in Albemarle County. Back during the Civil War this mine was used to extract lead to use for ammunition for the Confederate army. So it was really neat to be there and to think that this area played such a part in history.

We arrived at the parking lot and unloaded our items (which we put on a dolly...thank goodness) then got ready for our 1-1 1/2 mile hike through the woods to the mine. Fortunately the hike was level and shaded so it actually a very nice walk.

When we arrived I got my first experience of rock hounding. We took a shovel and a three pound sledge hammer and hiked to the top of a rock discard mound. At the start Matt would find fist size rocks or larger and give them to me to smash open with the sledge hammer to see if there were any nice minerals inside. It was quite fun to whack open the rocks and see the mystery that was covered by dirt and time. We were mainly looking for fluorite, quartz, and many others. We found a lot of Mica which is not what we were looking for, it is pretty and shiny and lovely but it crumbles in your hand as soon as you touch it.

We found quite a number of pretty rocks (not the minerals that they told us to look out for, but still pretty rocks). Then hiked down off the mound for a great picnic lunch. After our stomachs were full and happy we went down the hill to find more rocks. Soon after we started to feel some rain drops. I thought that it was no big deal because it would pass quickly...right? WRONG! We waited, in fact we waited under a black plastic tarp that someone had made into a tent (because they did not want the "little momma"...me... to get sick or wet). After we got tired of waiting we then gathered our stuff and left. Our thinking was with all of the leaves and rocks and rain it certainly would not be safe for either of us to be going around with sharp tools and rocks on uneven ground.

We packed up, and headed out. We were not 10 yards into the long hike back when we found out that our dolly had a flat tire...a VERY flat tire. So we were rearranging things so that I would carry some items, Matt would carry some items and the dolly only had a simple small shovel on it. Thank goodness that the president of the club stopped us, and helped us rearrange our items and put all of our rocks and heavy items in a double jogging stroller that he brought as a cart for his finds.

The rain did not stop, in fact it got heavier and heavier as we continued to walk. By the time we got to the car our clothes were dripping wet and muddy up to the knees. I am so glad that we brought an extra set of clothes to change into for the ride home. But we had a fun time with the people there, and we had pretty rocks to add to our collection. It was a wonderful day.

It is all happening so fast!

"It" in this case is the pregnancy. In some ways it seems to be forever before I can see my little one and hold her in my arms, but in other ways it seems as if I just found out yesterday that we were expecting.

This is a feeling that I have had for the past few weeks, but it became very real yesterday. Yesterday I called our local hospital to set up some pre-parenting classes. Matt and I decided to attend two classes infant CPR and Prepared Childbirth Education and also attend a hospital tour. But what really made this speed of the pregnancy a reality was the realization that in less than a month we are going to begin our prepared childbirth education class!

I can not wait for the end product of this pregnancy, but are we ready...will we ever be really ready? At the beginning I thought 9 months to prepare was such a very long time, now I am realizing that really it is not much time at all.

Guests

Matt and I had friends come over for Saturday and Sunday this past weekend. It was fun to sit and talk, play games, and play with their 2 year old and 6 month old (makes us even more anxious for our own little one to come!)

I noticed that one great benefit to company is that the house gets SPOTLESS! I wanted to take pictures because the house looked so nice, but the batteries in my camera are not working. Now that the company has gone, the house still looks nice and will be fairly easy to get it back to the nicer status.

Cleaning is not my most favorite thing to do, but company is a great incentive to get it done, and get it done well. I need more people to come over...and I need more people to come over more often!

What we found...In the compost?

Soon after we moved into our new house, Matt made these wonderful compost boxes for us to use (since we both were interested in gardening and compost). The boxes do a great job. The reason that they might look a little odd at this moment is that they have removable sides so that you can mix the two boxes when turning the compost, so the sides are down on most of the boxes.

When walking up to the compost box, you would not expect to see anything odd. Well about a month ago we started to see something odd but we ignored it. That is until...
We had to pick it. Yes, somehow we had a pumpkin growing in our compost bin. We did not plant it there (or at least not on purpose). We think that it might have been a stray seed that entered the compost from when we made jack-o-lanterns last year.
We watched our pumpkin grow. We were completely amazed that we had a pumpkin. Then this past Sunday we noticed that the leaves were not long for the world and that the pumpkin was completely orange. Time for us to pick it!

Here is Matt showing off both his pumpkin and the compost boxes (both of which he is very proud of...and should be)
My turn with the pumpkin...it is on my head because that is where Matt placed it very quickly before he snapped the picture.
Yep. 11 pounds and 3 ounces. This is going to make some wonderful pumpkin bread, pumpkin pie, pumpkin rolls, pumpkin....oh, I am getting hungry!
Since I am hungry I will finish off with a picture of some of the wonderful "Dagwood" sandwiches that Matt made this weekend. When we have produce coming from the garden these are regular staples at our house. Pickles made from the cucumber that we grew, tomatoes fresh from the garden....oh, these sandwiches are fabulous!

I love our garden :)
